The most important foundation question no one ever asks.

So, you have your foundation in your hand ready to go, an expert salesperson said it was amazing or maybe it was a raving review you read somewhere, possibly a friend that recommended it. Yet when you apply it, it just doesn’t sit right? you can’t blend it, it’s patchy, there is too much coverage or not enough! Arrgh another wasted product that will sit in your cupboard until you decide to throw it away.

When buying a foundation, what should be asked along with a number of other questions is ‘How do you apply it?’ and I’m not talking simply with what tool, like a brush or a sponge, I mean HOW DO YOU APPLY IT AND WITH WHAT APPLICATION ACTION?

Do you:

  • Stoke

  • Dab

  • Heavy Buff

  • Light Buff

  • Feather

  • Wipe

Think about it, imagine you are playing charades right now and put your imaginary tool to your face and act out what you are actually doing when you apply your face base.

Ok, so now that you have it, let me give some intimate insight into your morning routine, and hopefully help you make the right decision when choosing which tool to use for your style.

STROKE = Brush 6

You use a method that when you make contact with the skin you keep contact and glide the brush over the skin smoothing the product as you go. For this action you must be using a Flat Based Foundation Brush. You are maintaining contact therefor you need the brush to smooth as you apply it. My Angled Flat Foundation Brush is designed for users that stoke their foundation on and will leave smooth foundation application in it’s wake.

DAB = Iconic Duo Sponges

So you dab or pat your foundation onto your face, it’s really important to ensure you use a tool with and extremely smooth surface. Using a brush when you use this action can often leave a stippling effect from the hairs digging into the foundation. Using a dampened sponge would be the best tool for you to apply your base. My Iconic Duo Sponges and Latex free and incredibly smooth, rounded on one side and flat on the other which is great for both full face and under the eye application. Teamed with the mini one that comes included to help reach those hard-to-reach places. Also great for cream blush application.

HEAVY BUFF = Brush 3

You make contact with your skin and firmly swirl around and around, sound like you? Ok, it’s really important you use the right brush for this heavy duty action. You will need and densely packed, shorter hairs and rounded edges for this action as you maintain contact this will desperse the product evenly and melts the foundation onto the skin. Using a longer, loosley packed brush will distort the shape as you apply, creating an uneven finish while it flips and bends on the skin due to the pressure you like to use. Firm needs firm, so you will love my Dense Dome Foundation Brush.

FEATHER = Brush 4

A little bit tricky to master, and often the application method of Professional Make up Artists, this ‘flicking’ and feathering action is when minimal cantact is made with the skin, however the action is super fast to create an airbrushed finish. I have designed this brush to have all the angles you need to move around the face feathering and smoothing foundation using the wide side, simply turn to use the thin side to carve out contouring with ease and precision. A make up artists dream base brush!

WIPE = Iconic Duo Sponges

You rebel! You use your hands and fingers to smooth your foundation on your face with skin to skin touch, and that’s ok! Often a choice for those that love a BB cream or tinted moisturiser, however as a little added extra help using a rounded sponge over your face at the end of your application can help smooth out any uneven areas. My Iconic Duo Sponges are perfect for this, just remember to always dampen your sponge first for best results.
